Deciding where to stay in Rome is not that easy. You will want to be in one of the nicest areas of Rome, find a familiar, but quiet hotel, ideally close to public transports and, of course, that fits into your budget.
Room rates depend on the position and the season.
The peak rates are April, May, June, early July, September and October. At this time room rates can be double or more than in the winter months. The month of March and November can be a good time to visit with reasonable room rates and comfortable temperatures.
December, January and February can be wet, it may rain a couple of times per week, but it never freeze. August is very hot to sightsee in comfort, but if you choose a full day visit by private van with AC, you may face the problem.
The solution for many is to stay outside the city centre, but… don’t do it.
Even if many of the ‘resort hotels’ with well-known brands offer you full comfort facilities, they are therefore in totally isolated locations. You end up planning your day around restricted hotel shuttles or expensive taxi. Unless you can get a hotel very close a Railway station, even if the transfer into the city would be time consuming, stressful and expensive.
Don’t take under any consideration the option to take local busses, it can take an awful long time to get you into the centre. At least chose the hotel not far away – 450mt/150 ft., easy walking distance- to a Metro station. The trip to the city-centre will be fast and furious!
There is no universal “best” district to stay in Rome, but the main area where visitors spend all their time is quite compact, not like downtown area in the North American sense. That area is easy to recognize because surrounded by a III century wall. It goes from Via Veneto to the river Tiber and from Piazza del Popolo to the Colosseum. It is right there that you will spend a big proportion of your time on your feet to get around into.
Personally, I don’t suggest you to be located in the Vatican area, nice shopping district, but totally dead in the evening, nor in the Trastevere area which is, on the contrary, very touristic and noisy in the night. I’d personally skip the Termini Station area too, which typically Italian at all.
My favourite district is the historical centre with the areas of Monti, Campo dei Fiori, Navona, Pantheon and the Jewish Ghetto. These areas made of narrow cobbled streets are really easy to navigate by foot. They are full of hip boutiques, lively bars and buzzing restaurants. The incredible location makes it a great place to stay during a trip to Rome. It may not be the cheapest option, but you’ll earn in time and pleasure.
Campo de’ Fiori was once the heart of medieval Rome. Today, it hosts a lively market in the mornings, which attracts locals and tourists. There you’ll find plenty of boutiques on the surrounding streets, while tucked away here and there are family-run repair workshops and craft stores selling locally produced handmade items.
The nearby Jewish Ghetto has an intimate neighbourhood feel. It’s a particularly atmospheric place for a stroll, home to superb kosher eateries serving up authentic Roman-Jewish cuisine. Make sure you try carciofi alla giudìa, deep-fried artichokes, a springtime speciality of the Roman Ghetto.
My absolutely favourite area is the ancient and traditional Rione Monti, occupying the area around Cavour Metro station. It is where you’ll find the authentic Italian neighbourhood experience. Monti is picturesque and convenient. The neighbourhood boasts great wine bars and boutiques, and a lot of good and brand-new formula restaurants.
Walking distance from Trevi and the Colosseum, this area is hard to beat. If you have to catch a train, it is one stop away from Termini, where subway lines A & B cross. Monti would definitely be my top choice for where to stay in Rome.
